PCIA, Tech Industry Urge Congressional Support for Wireless Broadband Networks

Alexandria, VA - Targeted legislative language that would accelerate the deployment of broadband and next generation wireless services should be a key component of any spectrum policy recommendations by the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, according to a letter to the committee leadership from PCIA – The Wireless Infrastructure Association, and several other tech industry associations.
The letter highlights the important role of both spectrum and infrastructure in the provision of wireless services and notes the need for strategic network deployment to meet America’s growing demand for wireless broadband connectivity. In addition to the many economic benefits associated with enhanced network deployment—including job creation, “the deployment of wireless facilities on existing infrastructure . . . improves the efficient use of limited spectrum resources, [and] allows for more rapid deployment of next-generation technologies and greater opportunities for innovations and competition,” the letter states.

The groups urge Congress to streamline the redundant zoning re-review, noting that narrow legislative language would “enable wireless providers to expand their networks and services, which in turn will significantly increase the pace of broadband deployment and related economic, social, and general welfare benefit,” the letter states. The language is consistent with the Public Safety Spectrum and Wireless Innovation Act (S.911) introduced by Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va) and Ranking Member Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas), and a spectrum discussion draft from House Communications and Technology Subcommittee Chairman Greg Walden (R-Ore.)

The letter’s signatories include: Mike Fitch of PCIA, Jonathan Spalter of MobileFuture; Grant Seiffert of TIA; Daniel A. Varroney, TechAmerica; Jim Coleman of NATE and Fred Campbell of the Wireless Communications Association International.
