Boingo Fuels International Expansion, Adds Three Airports in China

LOS ANGELES – May 8th, 2013 – Boingo Wireless (NASDAQ: WIFI), the leading DAS and Wi-Fi provider that serves consumers, carriers and advertisers worldwide, today announced agreements to provide managed Wi-Fi services at three major airports in China: Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA).

Boingo Wi-Fi services are now available at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), and will soon be available at the two Shanghai airports. With the launch of services at these three airports, Boingo will offer premium Wi-Fi services at four of the top five most highly trafficked airports in China, which collectively serve more than 195 million travelers annually. Boingo will be the first international Wi-Fi service provider at these three airports, and secured the rights through an agreement with Newbridge Technology Co., Ltd.

Boingo will broadcast its “Boingo Hotspot” SSID in all three airports, providing full management of the user experience with the company’s globally recognized service to ensure quick, quality connections for travelers. Boingo’s managed Wi-Fi service includes authentication, roaming access and 24-hour support. Boingo already offers premium Wi-Fi service at the most highly trafficked airport in Asia, Beijing Capital International, as well as more than 65 other airports around the world.

“The PVG, SHA and CAN airports are increasingly important hubs, making them ideal places to introduce our money-saving Wi-Fi plans to international travelers,” said Allen Pan, Boingo’s director of Asia Pacific. “International cellular roaming tariffs continue to be costly and inconsistent throughout the Asia Pacific region. Our neutral host Wi-Fi roaming platform provides reliable connectivity to users, and helps eliminate that month-end ‘bill shock’ that so many travelers experience.”

Premium Wi-Fi service at these airports will also be available to Boingo’s roaming and platform service partners, including Orange France, NTT DOCOMO, Skype, TeliaSonera, LGU+, Korea Telecom, Telefonica, and Verizon, which wholesale Wi-Fi access from Boingo and provide self-branded Wi-Fi to their customers as part of their existing services.

Passengers can access Boingo Wi-Fi at these three airports via one of Boingo’s access plans, including Boingo Asia Pacific, providing unlimited access throughout the Asia Pacific region for $11.95 per month, and Boingo Global, providing flat rate access anywhere in the world for $59 per month. Hourly and day pass options are also available.

Boingo is the leading provider of airport Wi-Fi in North America and Europe, and was named “Best Wi-Fi Service” in the 2012 Global Traveler “GT Tested” Awards. The company manages Wi-Fi services at more than 65 leading airports worldwide, including other high-traffic airports in the Asia Pacific region such as Bangkok Suvarnabhumi International and Phuket International Airport, as well as international hubs London Heathrow, Chicago O’Hare, New York John F. Kennedy, and Rome Leonardo da Vinci Fiumicino.

Boingo Wireless Appoints Nick Hulse President

LOS ANGELES – May 6th, 2013 – Boingo Wireless (NASDAQ: WIFI), the leading DAS and Wi-Fi provider that serves consumers, carriers and advertisers worldwide, today announced that Nick Hulse has been appointed President of the company. He will report to CEO Dave Hagan and assumes day-to-day responsibilities for maximizing revenue through the Sales, Marketing, Product, and Business Development teams.

Hulse brings nearly 25 years of executive experience in sales, marketing, and operations positions, most recently as the Chief Revenue Officer for the Rubicon Project where he was responsible for all company revenues, client services, marketing, technical operations, and international teams. He has previously held senior executive roles with iPass and Microsoft.

“Nick brings deep experience in industry sectors where we have significant growth potential,” said Hagan, Boingo Wireless CEO. “He has a history of successfully helping companies scale their revenues and maximize growth opportunities.”

“Since we’ve expanded our monetization platform considerably over the last year, we believe it’s time to bring in a dedicated executive who can drive growth and manage the execution against those opportunities,” added Hagan.

“Boingo has built a strong, diversified platform with a tremendous opportunity to grow much larger,” said Hulse, president of Boingo Wireless. “As the wireless industry looks to small cell providers like Boingo to help build the infrastructure to support exploding demand for data – and to provide services to help monetize that demand – we’ll be front and center to capitalize on their interest.”

With the acquisitions of Cloud Nine Media in 2012 and the Endeka Group in 2013, Boingo has expanded its global wireless service provider business to also include digital media and sponsorships, as well as military base broadband and IPTV services. Combined with elevated interest in both DAS and Wi-Fi networks in public venues, the new business lines create a unique portfolio of properties with a diversified monetization platform that will be cultivated by Hulse.

A Better DAS, Simplified: CommScope Introduces New DAS Platform for Rapid Deployment

HICKORY, N.C.--CommScope has stripped the complexity out of integrating a distributed antenna system (DAS) into a macro wireless network by upgrading its ION® platform into a simple to use, plug-and-play solution. The new ION-Ufeatures integrated guidance and intelligence, enabling wireless network operators to design, plan, deploy and optimize a DAS more quickly and efficiently and at a lower total cost of ownership.

“The ION-U has built-in intelligence that greatly simplifies installation, transforming a job that required considerable expertise into a relatively easy task,” said Matt Melester, senior vice president and general manager, Distributed Coverage and Capacity Solutions, CommScope. “If you can connect a new printer to a computer or navigate a software installation wizard, then you can install the ION-U.”

  1. DAS is a well-proven solution for network capacity, innovation for simplifying the practical implementation of that solution has been stubbornly slow. This lack of simplification has meant longer time to market, prohibitively expensive engineering skill requirements and notoriously difficult optimization, testing and maintenance. Every stage of traditional DAS deployment can be an exercise in extra expense and delayed ROI. Operators continue to utilize DAS, however, because of the pressing need to offload traffic from the macro network in order to free up capacity for ever-increasing mobile data usage.

In order to simplify DAS deployment, CommScope offers the ION-U, part of the Andrew® portfolio of wireless solutions, with these features:

  • Embedded intelligence, which intuitively guides the design, planning, installation, setup, commissioning and optimization with virtually foolproof simplicity
  • Remote configuration tools that enable operators to re-sectorize and access auto-leveling functions from anywhere in the world or right at the head end
  • Built-in monitoring for measuring network quality, monitoring interference and passive intermodulation (PIM) and conducting detailed uplink/downlink spectrum analysis
  • Smart alarms for more quickly and efficiently troubleshooting quality of service (QoS) issues
  • Automatic documentation, including bill of materials, system configuration file, interconnect diagrams, rack elevation drawings according to power/thermal loading specs and commissioning records, which saves time and reduces errors
  • A unified indoor-outdoor, low and high power platform in a single master unit, which reduces space requirements and the number of cable runs while maximizing design flexibility

“The need for capacity relief could create applications for about 2.5 million DAS nodes to go into service by 2017, doubling today’s demand,” said Melester. “With the true plug-and-play DAS capability of our new ION-U platform, operators can take on that challenge with reduced complexity, exceptional network agility and quality and savings in total cost of ownership and speed to market.”

The ION-U is available now in North America, while CommScope expects to make it available in other regions later this year, starting with Europe.

Venues and locations that should benefit from deploying the ION-U include airports, railways, arenas, corporate offices, school campuses, hospitals and outdoor areas such as congested urban and suburban areas. CommScope’s Distributed Coverage and Capacity Solutions team has built DAS in many of the world’s most challenging RF environments since 1988.
